Mom of the Month Questions:
Hometown (where you grew up): Durham, NC
Current part of the Triangle that you live in: Cary
Education: BSBA and MAC from UNC-Chapel Hill
Fit4Mom Member since: Running Mamas Fall 2012; Body Back January 2013
Members of your Family: Husband of 10 years, Scott; Caitlyn (6 ½); Caroline (4); Alex (1)
Tell us about your children: I have three little comedians. We always joke that my husband has them in “silly school.” So, there are a lot of laughs in the Russell household. They are all also very loving. It has been so much fun watching the two older girls “mother” their baby brother. It is also fun to see their individual interests. Caitlyn loves art and climbing trees. Caroline loves dancing and singing and does an excellent cover of “Shake it off.” Alex is fulfilling the gender stereotype so far, and he loves balls and cars.
Current/previous Career: Currently a manager in a public accounting firm
What was your childhood ambition? Sadly, I didn’t have one or I can’t remember. I definitely lived in the “now” as a child.
What does motherhood mean to you? Motherhood means an opportunity to see things through a child’s eyes again. It is a chance to rediscover the world.
What is the furthest you have been from home? China – I took a Global Immersion Elective while in the MAC program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
What has Body Back done for you? Body back has given me the strength to keep up with these kiddos. It has also helped me return to my pre-pregnancy weight after baby #2, and I’m close again after baby #3. I have met so many amazing, strong, fun moms through Body Back. That’s probably the main reason I keep coming back!
What has Running Mamas done for you? With running, I need a goal and external motivation, especially after the third child. Life is so busy, and I have lost my stamina. It hasn’t been easy to start running again. Running Mamas keeps me accountable.
What is your favorite exercise? I don’t have one favorite exercise – I think I like them all. So, I would say that my “favorite” is variety. That’s probably why I love Body Back so much. It’s a great mix of cardio, strength & core.
What is your proudest moment? I feel like this may be a common response, but I have three proud moments that tie for my proudest. The births of my children are without a doubt my proudest moments. It always amazes me what a woman’s body can do.
What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? My three favorite “things” are the beach, quiet time (which I don’t get very much of these days), and exercise.
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. Well, this may not be so much of a surprise to many because I think this story has made the rounds through Fit4Mom, but I gave birth to my third child in the car on the side of I-40! I should also add that he was 10 lb 5 oz and 22 inches long! After baby Alex sped into the world, my husband hopped back into the car and we drove on to the Birth Center in Chapel Hill. It was such an amazing experience, and while not exactly how I pictured his birth, I wouldn’t change a thing.
If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? Since Scott was sitting right next to me, I went ahead and asked him. He says I am disciplined, intelligent, and passionate.
What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? One thing I have to remind myself of is to not let a bad week or two get me off track. My job is very busy and demanding, which means I may miss several weeks of Body Back or running. It’s hard to go back when I am exhausted from work and have lost some of my progress, but I always feel better after I do. Because of these breaks, I don’t always see the immediate progress that other moms do. After 8 months of Body Back, I am almost to my pre-baby weight. So, I guess my advice would be to give yourself time and don’t get discouraged. Life gets in the way of fitness for sure, but if you get off track, don’t give up. It’s hard to get going again, but you’ll feel better when you do.
